As discussed during the last blog the ASLA, or American Society of Landscape Architects, releases what they feel will be the upcoming trends for the year. Based on feedback from Landscape Architects the ASLA shares what trends they are currently seeing within the industry. These results are based on both single and multi family residential properties.
The following is a list of the most requested outdoor design elements in 2018:
Decking, seating/dining areas, hammocks and outdoor furniture
Outdoor kitchens and grills
Movie/TV/video theaters, wireless/internet, stereo systems
Outdoor heaters and cooling systems (including fans)
Pools and spa features (hot tubs, Jacuzzis, whirlpools, indoor/outdoor saunas, showers/baths)
This list tells us that the idea of the “Staycation” is still very strong. A few years ago the buzzword “Staycation” started gaining momentum. The general concept is that creating a backyard space you want to stay in is a better investment, and easier, than taking a vacation.

All the elements listed above add up to one fabulous backyard! However, in most cases one starts small. By choosing one or a few of the elements listed above you can create a great space to hang out in. You can certainly start small with a patio or gravel area for seating, eating and more. Want to upgrade? Add a fire pit or grill. In the next season if you want to add another element you can. You can even change your vision over time.
