It is important when you are considering making a home improvement to hire a company that knows what they are doing. In the world of contractors it is very easy to hire a company because of their low bid and not because of their credentials. This can cause big trouble down the road. If you hire someone inexperienced they may make mistakes that will cost you time and money down the road. There is nothing worse that doing a project a second time!
Did you know that our staff are certified by New York state? Both Jim Hoteling and Liz Snyder have degrees in landscape design and construction. These type of landscape programs focus on plant knowledge, design skills and construction principles. Mary Thomas, our landscape coordinator, has a degree in Floriculture and has worked in the nursery and garden center industry. Upon working in the field of landscaping for many years Jim, Liz and Mary became CNLPs, “Certified Nursery and Landscape Professionals”. To be come certified you need to have worked in the industry and passed a rigorous exam covering plant identification and care, pruning, soils and nutrients, hardscaping (walls, patios and drainage) and other practices in the industry. However, getting this accreditation is only part of the process – you also have to renew your certification. CNLP’s need to attend educational programs throughout the year and earn credits to keep their certification.
These programs are created and hosted by the New York State Nursery and Landscape Association. This association has chapters all over the state, and Hillside Garden Landscaping has been a member of our region in the Southern Tier over 30 years. Both Jim and Liz have served as President for this local chapter. By being members of this organization we at Hillside stay abreast of what is going on in the industry in regards to important updates. Updates in the area of design such as new plant species, hardscaping materials, environmental impact issues and more. We also stay up to date on regulations from the Department of Environmental Conservation, OSHA the NYS Department of Transportation and more.

We educate our staff by having our installation technicians attend industry leading education seminars. Here they learn about the latest installation techniques, the newest products and how to install and maintain them. One of our foreman, Parker Ward is even certified by the Interlocking Concrete and Pavement Institute where he was instructed and tested by one of the leading hardscape installation programs in the country.
