We love sharing some of our design tips to help our readers understand the reasoning behind our landscape design choices. Today would like to share some insight into how we create engaging backyard spaces.
When creating a landscape space we often work form the perimeters of the space inward. First we look at the height and depth of the space. If we are trying to create a more intimate space we need to plant some trees or larger shrubs around that space to provide the feeling of enclosure. By planting, or working around existing taller trees, we achieve an overhead plane that will bring the scale of the area down to a more personal level. Planting hedges or larger shrubs on the sides of the space will make the area feel more enclosed and more comfortable. Essentially we are creating the “walls” in our “outdoor room”.
From there we move on to the middle ground. These shrubs and perennials are smaller in scale and will be more noticeable as you use the space. Here is when we begin to play with color, texture and scent. You will be able to engage with this “layer” more. We can incorporate other items in the middle layer as well such as boulders or other larger natural stone, walls, fire pits and more.
The foreground layer comes next. This is usually, but not always, closest to the home. Here is where you focus on a patio or deck, furniture, grills or outdoor kitchen areas. There are the potions of the space you really engage in. The part of the space you “live in”. Choosing materials that will incorporate into the surrounding space to bring it all together is important.
Finally we add details such as container gardens, garden décor and more. Little accents that let your personality shine. You can choose colors and textures that coordinate with the larger items in your space. You can add your favorite decorative elements to make it all your own.
Some other elements to consider when creating an engaging outdoor space include lighting (will you be using the space at night?), sound (do you like the white noise of a water feature?) and perhaps technology (outdoor speakers? Electricity hookups?). These elements customize your space even further.
