Each year Garden Media Group comes out with their top list of landscape trends for the upcoming year. Over the next few weeks we will be highlighting these trends. Next up? “Root to Stem”
We previously shared some of the ways that Garden Media Group has found that we are experiencing a cultural shift in becoming more ecologically responsible. Todays blog takes that one step further by introducing the “Root to Stem” movement. Some main points driving the movement? Zero waste, “up cycling” (reusing something for other than it’s intended purpose), re-commerce and conscious consumption. Root to Stem refers to wanting to know where our products come from, what they are made of, how they effect our environment and where they will end up when we are finished with them.

This is hopefully proof that we are on the right track when it comes to the future of our environment. Some numbers Garden Media shared – 1/3 of all global food is wasted each year. That breaks down to approximately 4.4 pounds of garbage per person, per day. Wow. That is what causes landfills to be the 3rd largest source of greenhouse gas. If each household were to compost food scraps we could reduce waste by 40%. 40%!!! One small change makes a HUGE difference!

Other ways our society is trying to reduce waste is by reducing our plastic use. Bans are in motion across the country to ban single use plastics. This is creating a demand for compostable alternatives such as having packaging made from degradable plant fibers and other new technologies.
The necessity to reduce our waste is imperative. It will be the future generations that take these trends and run with them. Their future depends on it…and they know it. Let’s hope this trend is just the beginning of a big change.
