Are you considering using natural stone on your landscape? Here are some of our favorite benefits to using natural stone.
1 – Using Local Resources:
The first reason for using natural stone is that it is usually a readily available resource. Using local stone is a great way to incorporate native, local material into your space. It is usually also the most cost effective choice. Costs of shipping are lower for regional products since rocks are heavy and moving them long distances can become cost prohibitive.
2 – It “Fits” The Landscape:
Natural stone visually can fit into the landscape seamlessly because it echoes the natural geography of where you live. You can using native boulders in a retaining wall or as an accent piece. They often come from the same quarry as other smaller types of stone you wish to incorporate such as stepping stones and stone mulch. They will all be made of the same material so they naturally “match”. Natural stone can help you avoid having the hardscapes in your space look artificial.
3 – Longevity:
When installed correctly, natural stone can last a very long time. It is normal to get some chipping or cracking over time, but for the most part it is very long lasting. Stone patios and walkways, as long as they are not mortared together, can be lifted and reset if heaving occurs. This can be much easier and cost effective to repair compared to concrete. If concrete cracks or heaves it may need to be demolished and removed. Natural stone is far less likely to discolor over time as well. Because there are no artificial pigments added the color, it stays true and will not fade.
